As one of the pioneers in the European Jazz Rock/Fusion Jazz movement in the 70s, of course OSTINATO was also inspired by Miles Davis. Each of the individual band members in their own way: Tommy Böröcz was clearly impressed by Billy Cobham's rock drumming style, Andi Steirer was enthused by the role percussion started to play in groove music, Rens Newland really loved the approach of John McLaughlin. The musicians who joined later, such as Robert Riegler and Robert Schönherr, certainly included Miles in their playing, directly or indirectly through Joe Zawinul. Likewise, the ostinato horn section uses the same insights that Miles gained for the start of a more global, cosmopolitan style of playing. At this concert the group presented a selection of their own inspirational works from their albums, as well as some adaptions of Miles Davis tunes.

Slowwalker Musical Prostitution
Que Vida, Me Querida Galactic Jazzdance
On a Cold Summerday Straight On Chili Con Carne
This is the second album of the Funk/Fusion/Latin Jazz band. At this time the status of the group was quite settled, after the time of big festivals like Velden and Wiesen in Austria. The band is touring at least two times a year, mostly in the german speaking part of Europe: Austria, Switserland, Germany. The main actors are still Tommy Böröcz and Rens Newland as the composers and arrangers, the rest of the band is chancing, especially because of the overlap situation with the Vienna Art Orchestra, which is very succesful at that time and doing big long tours. But Vienna is a good source for Jazz musicians. so new talents get their chance here, like the genious trumpet player Andy Haderer, who is later changing to the famous WDR Big Band on lead trumpet! The musical ideas and interpretations are fresh, partly a little more rocky or heavy grooving. CD Line-up: TOMMY BÖRÖCZ drums, congas, timbales, claves, maracas, cowbells, guiro, tambourin, keyboards on „Slowwalker“, grand piano on „Que Vida Me Querida“ RENS NEWLAND all guitars, guitar synthesizer, agogobells, Chinese bells, tambourine, Linn programming HARRY GANSBERGER keyboards, synthesizer programming ALBERT KREUZER bass ANDREAS HADERER trumpet, flugelhorn KLAUS DICKBAUER alto saxophone MARTIN FUSS soprano & tenor saxophone

Koyo
Audiosamples (click to start & stop):
“Koyo” touches upon the motivations that drive the band to create music. When the desire to discover and explore the world awakens in him, the Koyo embarks on a journey leaving his homeland and loved ones behind. Destitute, he wanders through various countries until he reaches a new, unknown land, where he is confronted with a new set of values much different from his own. Even though he struggles financially, he uses his music and spirituality to carve a way through this strange world, in hopes of building a dignified life for himself.
Arising from the Jazz-Sector, Barakah is enriching its music with a variety of stylistic influences from around the world with no hesitation. Yet the band has managed to preserve a certain openness for musical styles like Hip-Hop, Funk, Rock and Metal and to artistically interweave these styles in their repertoire, with elements of North African Gnawa music and Latin American rhythms. The musically diverse components are skillfully merged into an energetic and impulsive aesthetic. With all that comes a great joy in improvising and a slope to experimental concepts.
In their quest for their identity, Barakah pushes their musical boundaries to explore new concepts and ideas. On this journey, the image of Koyo serves as a guide to lead the band on, and as a reminder of what fascinated them so about music in the first place.

Erwin Schmidt, Martin Fuss, Wolfgang Pointner and Vladimir Kostadinovic are all masters of their respective instruments in any case and these four musicians have more in common than their jazz expertise: what makes The Organ Champs unbeatable as a quartet is their shared grounding in the blues. Plus that a certain funky vibe always underlies their mellow songs and solos. Their debut recording required no major advance coordination, but they simply counted themselves in and turned it on. “Turn it on” is also the name of the album, which kicks off with a vigorous drumroll! At its epicentre is the earthy, vibrant sound of the Hammond organ, a recurrent feature throughout the history of jazz that gives the music an irresistible tingling warmth. The Organ Champs also like to make forays in the direction of soul jazz and hard bop, with classics by the likes of Horace Silver, Lee Morgan or Larry Young. In their own songs, though, they skilfully bring their wide-ranging influences bang up to date.

The Austrian guitarist Roland Stonek is at home in several styles, like Jazz, Country and Latin. Here he finally presents his first album as a bandleader, of course with his favorite kind of music: Jazz in the tradition of Wes Montgomery. He chose the guitar/organ/drums-format, with Joris Dudli on drums and Erwin Schmidt on the organ and decided – since it is his debut – to expand the trio for this recording by a hornsection consisting of the creme-de-la-creme of Austrian musicians: Daniel Nösig/trumpet, Bernhard Wiesinger/alto sax & flute, Thomas Kugi/tenor & baritone sax and Robert Bachner/trombone. On six of his eight original compositions you can hear them blowing those great horn arrangements written by the gifted Thomas Kugi. These - together with the superb playing of those admirable musicians – add another dimension to his music.

A very big sound and a great hard bop melodic material, that are the treasures that Raklo Weinrich presents to us on these recordings. Fine round exclusively original compositions of the bandleader create a very pleasant atmosphere: soft sounding, but enough interesting lines we hear from all the musicians: Martin Wöss on Rhodes, Synth and Grand Piano, Werner Feldgrill on Electric Bass, Wolfi Rainer on Drums, Rainer Gradischnig on Percussion, Herwig Gradischnig on Tenor Sax (on selected titles). Groovy beats from Swing to Funk. A fine Bossa features the lady-singer Jacqueline Patricio.

A broad spectrum of his composing as well as his playing is showed here of Rens Newland. He choose to double all the melodies with the Tenor Sax of master Herb Berger, because in the several gigs and recordings Rens found out, that the blend is perfect between him and Herb! Also the other fellow musicians, Wolfi Rainer on drums, Andy Mayerl on upright bass and Martin Wöss on piano act very keen and tasty, leaving room for the melodies and improvisations. The Bandleader uses a lot of different electric guitars, from the Jazz Gibson L5 to Fender Tele, even the Line 6 Variax makes wonderful appearences.
The style goes from easy going Groove Jazz and some light Funk to interesting Fusion ballads and Jazz sounds.
