Myroslav Levytsky(p) and Rens Newland(g), both great personalities on their instruments, came together the first time in 2001. In the following years a cooperation developed itself between Braty Bluzu (the band of Myroslav and his brother Oleg) and Rens Newland. Myroslav has classical and eastern roots, Rens has Blues, Rock and Jazz, so western roots. They had a small Tour in Austria which resulted in a Live Album "Myroslav Levytsky & Rens Newland Project "One Autumn Concert" released in the Ukrain. This is the second album of just the two, again recorded in Vienna in Rens' Orange House Studio. It's mainly inspirational and meditative solo Piano pieces. Three tracks feature Rens Newlnd on steel string guitar.

Bouncin' on the Beat

Recorded live at Porgy & Bess, Vienna, Austria, Jan. 2023,.
As one of the pioneers in the European Jazz Rock/Fusion Jazz movement in the 70s, of course OSTINATO was also inspired by Miles Davis. Each of the individual band members in their own way: Tommy Böröcz was clearly impressed by Billy Cobham's rock drumming style, Andi Steirer was enthused by the role percussion started to play in groove music, Rens Newland really loved the approach of John McLaughlin. The musicians who joined later, such as Robert Riegler and Robert Schönherr, certainly included Miles in their playing, directly or indirectly through Joe Zawinul. Likewise, the ostinato horn section uses the same insights that Miles gained for the start of a more global, cosmopolitan style of playing. At this concert the group presented a selection of their own inspirational works from their albums, as well as some adaptions of Miles Davis tunes.

Audiosamples (click to start & stop):
Slowwalker Musical Prostitution
Que Vida, Me Querida Galactic Jazzdance
On a Cold Summerday Straight On Chili Con Carne

This is the second album of the Funk/Fusion/Latin Jazz band. At this time the status of the group was quite settled, after the time of big festivals like Velden and Wiesen in Austria. The band is touring at least two times a year, mostly in the german speaking part of Europe: Austria, Switserland, Germany. The main actors are still Tommy Böröcz and Rens Newland as the composers and arrangers, the rest of the band is chancing, especially  because of the overlap situation with the Vienna Art Orchestra, which is very succesful at that time and doing big long tours. But Vienna is a good source for Jazz musicians. so new talents get their chance here, like the genious trumpet player Andy Haderer, who is later changing to the famous WDR Big Band on lead trumpet!  The musical ideas and interpretations are fresh, partly a little more rocky or heavy grooving. CD Line-up: TOMMY BÖRÖCZ drums, congas, timbales, claves, maracas, cowbells, guiro, tambourin, keyboards on „Slowwalker“, grand piano on „Que Vida Me Querida“ RENS NEWLAND all guitars, guitar synthesizer, agogobells, Chinese bells, tambourine, Linn programming HARRY GANSBERGER keyboards, synthesizer programming ALBERT KREUZER bass ANDREAS HADERER trumpet, flugelhorn KLAUS DICKBAUER alto saxophone MARTIN FUSS soprano & tenor saxophone

Blues Indeed (w. Fuse Bluezz feat. Ric Toldon)

Audiosamples (click to start & stop):

As Rens Newland's roots were in the 1960s Blues, the Electric Blues of John Mayall, Eric Clapton and in Holland Cuby & the Blizzards or Living Blues. and he always tried to keep this deep music feeling in all the projects and styles he did in the meantime, it was no big jump to get back into that and make a Blues album. He and his friend Peter Gruber (bass player) were talking now and then in the last years, that they should do such a project together! Now finally in the Corona times, they did it. Finding the right singer is not easy, but they found him: Ric Toldon is a cool american guy (is also percussionist) living in Vienna, who even met Jimi Hendrix and was around at Woodstock and when the Stones played in the USA. As drummer the young Simon Springer was their first choice, as well as Rens' main keyboard man Martin Wöss for the piano and synth additions. The basic sound is of course build on Mr. Newland's guitars, here he used some of his dearest instruments, like Gibson ES 335 and L5, Fender Strato and Tele, Godin Red Line, Parker Fly and Takamine Acoustic Steel. The Tracks show the broad possibilities of the Blues in form and sound: Delta Blues, Funkblues, Jazzblues, Rockblues, Acoustic Blues and more. Some instrumental tracks are of course also part of the concept! All the music is by the bandleader and most of the lyrcs, some are by Ric Toldon, like "Sneeky C" with humour and desperation at the same time.

Tribe Trio Tracks

Audiosamples (click to start & stop):
Silent to Strong Wild Coolness  Careful & Curious Sweet Little Devil
Funny Smart Boy Sage & Singing Good Girl, Mad Girl  Creative Guy
Wonderful Innocence Jolly, Tough and Tireless
Feeling Fine Against All Odds The Steady One

These are basically trio versions of all the songs from my former "solo" album "Family Trax", which are dedicated to his people (his tribe). The first production was very precise and with emphasis on the compositions and the many different guitars. Here on these recordings he got the thing more powerful, groovy and vivid by the added drums (Oliver Gattringer) and bass (Willi Langer). It brings up other essences of the characters he describes here. it's an unusual idea indeed to release two different versions of the same material! The musical styles go from Funk and Jazz to Rock and Hip-Hop, but all in his range of taste!
Again he used a lot of different guitars out of his collection to get the right sound to each vision.

This is a very emotional, interesting and important project by guitar artists Rens Newland
With a very precise composing system he made melody modules, blocks or modules
(how you like to call it), constructed out of the names of the people of his tribe. Additionally he tried to weave their personalities, their characters,
music tastes and moods into the compositions and arrangements.
The musical styles go from Funk and Jazz to Rock and Hip-Hop, but all in his range of taste!
Again he used a lot of different guitars out of his collection to get the right sound to each vision.

A broad spectrum of his composing as well as his playing is showed here of Rens Newland. He choose to double all the melodies with the Tenor Sax of master Herb Berger, because in the several gigs and recordings Rens found out, that the blend is perfect between him and Herb! Also the other fellow musicians, Wolfi Rainer on drums, Andy Mayerl on upright bass and Martin Wöss on piano act very keen and tasty, leaving room for the melodies and improvisations. The Bandleader uses a lot of different electric guitars, from the Jazz Gibson L5 to Fender Tele, even the Line 6 Variax makes wonderful appearences.
The style goes from easy going Groove Jazz and some light Funk to interesting Fusion ballads and Jazz sounds.

This was the first album of the austrian Funk/Fusion/Latin Jazz band Ostinato. At that time the band already existed for some years, winning talent competitions and already playing lots of concerts. A big milestone for the group was the tour to South-America. Tommy Böröcz came back with a head full of musical ideas and he made a bunch of great compositions, integrating three horns now to get a bigger sound! Rens Newland just came into the band before and started helping to organize the vehicle and composing for the project. Also several other prominent new personalities of the Vienna scene joined the band and the touring life started.
