Recorded live at Porgy & Bess, Vienna, Austria, Jan. 2023,.
As one of the pioneers in the European Jazz Rock/Fusion Jazz movement in the 70s, of course OSTINATO was also inspired by Miles Davis. Each of the individual band members in their own way: Tommy Böröcz was clearly impressed by Billy Cobham's rock drumming style, Andi Steirer was enthused by the role percussion started to play in groove music, Rens Newland really loved the approach of John McLaughlin. The musicians who joined later, such as Robert Riegler and Robert Schönherr, certainly included Miles in their playing, directly or indirectly through Joe Zawinul. Likewise, the ostinato horn section uses the same insights that Miles gained for the start of a more global, cosmopolitan style of playing. At this concert the group presented a selection of their own inspirational works from their albums, as well as some adaptions of Miles Davis tunes.

This is the second album of the Funk/Fusion/Latin Jazz band. At this time the status of the group was quite settled, after the time of big festivals like Velden and Wiesen in Austria. The band is touring at least two times a year, mostly in the german speaking part of Europe: Austria, Switserland, Germany.

SCOPE III (only digital)

Musiphysical Experience Super Serenade Perpetuum We Gotta Do (voc) Fire Words Pure, Magic & Clean Spring Thing Part1 instr Spring Thing Part2 voc Strunk Honky Pank Electric Eel

This is the 3rd album of the legendary Fusionband Scope! This one was recorded in 1977 but not released till digitally round 2010. After Henk Zomer (for higher goals) and Rik Elings (to concentrate on his study at the music conservatory) left the band Rens Newland took over.the leadership and the capture of the »Scope III history« began: It was a fresh start with Robert Vink on drums, first with Peter Schön on keyboards and Paul Bachmeier on bass. Soon Arthur Clarck took over the bass position and he also moved to Zwolle! 1976 Rob Franken joined in again! Now we had a tight band with steady rehearsals again! Rens Newland was very inspired and wrote a lot of crazy tunes, quite wild, and Scope started to play concerts again.

The second album (1975) of the Dutch groundbraking legendary fusion band Scope, now available as CD and digitally! By the addition of Rob Franken - one of the greatest European pianists/Synthesizer players at that time -, plus that Rik Elings changed to the bass, the group really came into a new aera and level. Henk Zomer again is inspiring and crazy on drums! Rens Nieuwland (a.k.a. Newland) stans out funky and rock-jazzy on guitar!   "One of the top jazz rock fusion LPs out there...really high-skilled group with endless melodies and plenty of shred time". (Z.K.K.), "Great! Even better than their first. Some groovy zeuhl-ish funky here!"

A broad spectrum of his composing as well as his playing is showed here of Rens Newland. He choose to double all the melodies with the Tenor Sax of master Herb Berger, because in the several gigs and recordings Rens found out, that the blend is perfect between him and Herb! Also the other fellow musicians, Wolfi Rainer on drums, Andy Mayerl on upright bass and Martin Wöss on piano act very keen and tasty, leaving room for the melodies and improvisations. The Bandleader uses a lot of different electric guitars, from the Jazz Gibson L5 to Fender Tele, even the Line 6 Variax makes wonderful appearences.
The style goes from easy going Groove Jazz and some light Funk to interesting Fusion ballads and Jazz sounds.

This was the first album of the austrian Funk/Fusion/Latin Jazz band Ostinato. At that time the band already existed for some years, winning talent competitions and already playing lots of concerts. A big milestone for the group was the tour to South-America. Tommy Böröcz came back with a head full of musical ideas and he made a bunch of great compositions, integrating three horns now to get a bigger sound! Rens Newland just came into the band before and started helping to organize the vehicle and composing for the project. Also several other prominent new personalities of the Vienna scene joined the band and the touring life started.

Since decades the highly gifted and successful Austrian percussionist Andi Steirer is on tour and playing in the studio with numerous projects: Ostinato, Karl Ratzer, Falco, Fritz Pauer, Ludwig Hirsch (steady band member since 1986), Rainhard Fendrich, Austria 3, Alegre Correa, Dorretta Carter, Harri Stojka, Stella Jones, Heinz von Hermann, Cesár Sampson a.m.m.! On this album he 'eventually' presents his own personal vision in music: A “meditation about the city” with lots of percussion, deep emotions and reaching up to ecstasy! You could experience the city as one big trance sequence, with its repeating processes, work rhythms and rituals! The participating musicians are: Hannes Oberwalder on keyboards, Jojo Lackner on electric bass and Berni Schedelberger on congas. To do completely without drums is kind of novel. The soloist Andi Steirer (on bongos) builds his statements over keyboard layers, without having melody or harmony at his disposal!

2017: An important jubilee year for Ostinato: celebrating 40 years on stage with a big Gala concert in their hometown Vienna and a jubilee tour as well! The band was founded in the middle of the seventies. From the start Tommy Böröcz was the driving power (as drummer & writer) of the project. In the eighties Rens Newland (a Dutchman in Vienna) joined the band as guitarist and writer and in the following decades these two artists shared the musical directing and the band organizing. Ostinato has gained an established name in European Funk, Fusion and Latin Jazz, the influence of which they took home from a tour in South America. The jubilee album contents exclusively original compositions and all the aspects of the typical Ostinato Sound are represented. From straight Funk through more complicated Fusion Jazz to Latin Jazz, plus three special dedications to Jimi Hendrix, Joe Zawinul and Miles Davis. The steady line-up: Christian Maurer . tenor- and soprano saxophone, Andi See . alto saxophone, Horst Michael Schaffer . trumpet and flügelhorn, Martin Wöss . keyboards, Robert Riegler . bass, Andi Steirer . percussion, Rens Newland . guitars, composition and arrangement, Tommy Böröcz . drums, composition and arrangement

Myroslav Levytsky(p) and Rens Newland(g), both great personalities on their instruments, came together the first time in 2001. In the following years a cooperation developed itself between Braty Bluzu (the band of Myroslav and his brother Oleg) and Rens Newland. Myroslav has classical and eastern roots, Rens has Blues, Rock and Jazz, so western roots. This is the very interesting and sensitive meeting of these two worlds!
